This year, apart from Bollywood cinema, a few works of language cinema that impressed us have been included to the list of socially relevant feature films. They got people talking and discussed the issues we are facing in the society we live in. While Mulshi Pattern talks about the hardships faced by farmers in small villages, Njan Marykutty talks about a man who wants to transition into a woman and the obstacles he faces. All these films tackle social issues and help us understand them better. These films have really left an impact on us.
1. Annadatta Sukhibhava (Telugu)
R Narayana Murthy directed the movie which portrays the problems faced by the farmers in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
2. Badhaai Ho (Hindi)
Badhaai Ho is a coming of age comedy family drama. In an age when parents expect to see grandkids, Ayushmann’s mother gets pregnant and his whole life turns upside down. Right from dealing with social embarrassment to coming to terms with his parents’ active sex life, the film is a total fun ride.
3. Hichki (Hindi)
The Indian adaptation of Brad Cohen's autobiography Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had, Hichki stars Rani Mukerji in the lead role of an aspiring teacher having Tourette syndrome, who must prove herself by educating a group of underprivileged students.
4. Mulshi Pattern (Marathi)
A stark portrayal of the hardships faced by farmers, Mulshi Pattern tackles some of the raging issues of our times. The film lays bare the deep flaws of the system which turns the farmer into a criminal and a social outcast.
5. Njan Marykutty (Malayalam)
Marykutty was born a man but wishes to be, and is in the process of becoming, a woman. She aspires to be a police officer but hurdles are many.
6. Paddayi (Tulu)
Paddayi is the story of Madhava and Sugandhi. They are a newly married couple from the fishing community in India. Driven by ambition, they bring upon themselves an epic tragedy.
7. Padman (Hindi)
Inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu who introduced low-cost sanitary pads, Padman is based on the short story "The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land" in Twinkle Khanna's book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad.
8. Raazi (Hindi)
Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Raazi’ showed Alia Bhatt as ‘Sehmat’ who played the role of an Indian spy who is married to a Pakistani officer. While the movie completely focuses on Sehmat’s devotion towards her nation, there is also an untold love story.
9. Samaksham (Malayalam)
Shivaram is shattered by two deaths he witnessed as a doctor. He then starts questioning the prevalent medical practises and the wide use of pesticides. Samaksham is his quest for answers and the lengths he is willing to go to find a solution.
10. Tame Keva? (Gujarati)
A comical yet emotional film that talks about pointlessness and insensitivity that comes with modern day casteism.
