How often have you played a game of Charades, frantically motioning to your friends hoping they’ll get the gist of what you’re trying to say? That frustration you feel in that moment, is what I assume every single deaf person struggles with, everyday. India has this amazing tendency to take in something, and make it their own. Case in point–Chindian food. Unsurprisingly, the same has happened to dialects around the nation, and sign language hasn’t escaped this phenomenon either. In fact, this has led to so many complications, that the country till date has only 300 sign language interpreters, says the Indian Express. This automatically leads to a much lower literacy rate. Only 5% of deaf children go to school, and an even lower percentage receives education in sign language. The Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) has been put to the task of creating a graphic dictionary for sign language. The dictionary will contain signs used across the country, as well as region specific signs. The ISLRTC will compile the words existing from several other scholar reports, as well as include their own research.
