‘Walls of Kindness’ Are Popping Up Across India & They’re Making Winter Warmer

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but these murals mean much, much more to those in need. ‘Walls of Kindness’, an initiative that first sprang up in Iran to help the homeless survive the cold winter is a testament to utilitarian art. The process behind it was simple. Hangers were put up with winter clothes, beside a wall with only one instruction — take what you need, leave what you don’t.
To take up an initiative like that seemed dubious in India, considering our society has a more dog eat dog philosophy than a humanitarian feel to it. Then again, our country is full of surprises. The first wall was set up in Bhilwara, Rajasthan according to a report by The Hindustan Times. A couple proposed the idea to Pradeep Singh Sangawat of the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT), who seemed skeptical at first.
