You think stars like Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence live fairytale lives? They suffer from anxiety and depression too...
by Yash Saboo September 30 2017, 6:42 pm Estimated Reading Time: 2 mins, 30 secsEmma Stone appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and discussed her history of anxiety and panic attacks post-Oscar win. “I was a very, very, very anxious child and I had a lot of panic attacks", the star of Battle of the Sexes and La La Land said. "I still have anxiety to this day but not panic attacks. I benefitted in a big way from therapy. I started at seven." she said.
This is not the first time she has spoken about this issue openly. As a child, she believed she would never be able to leave her native Arizona, but by age 15 she was able to move to Hollywood.
Colbert showed the audience a picture drawn by Stone which she brought along with her. She drew it during therapy when she was 9 years old. "This is me, I guess. It’s really great artistry with my shoes and then this is anxiety here. It’s a little green monster that looks a little bit, as someone backstage said, a uterus with some ovaries. But I didn’t mean for it to be hormonally related in any way. Like I said, I was 9.”, she said.
Stone has been able to manage anxiety with great therapists and great cognitive behavioural tools - meditation and lots of things. She believes that life goes in stages, and it has always been something that she's lived with and that flares up in big ways at different times in her life.
There are other celebrities who have opened up about their health issues in the past:
Adele: "I can slip in and out of depression quite easily", she said to Vanity Fair. "I have anxiety attacks, constant panicking on stage, my heart feels like it's going to explode because I never feel like I'm going to deliver, ever."
J.K Rowling: The author opened up when she appeared on Oprah in 2010. "I think I had tendencies toward depression from quite young and it's so difficult to describe it to someone who has never been there. It's not sadness- I know sadness. It's a cold absence of feeling."
Zayn Malik: Zayn penned an emotional essay about coping up with anxiety. He tweeted a statement in 2016 that surprised everyone, saying "I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career".
Taylor Swift: Taylor Swift has always made songs on relationships. There's a reason behind it. She also said her song Out of the Woods from her album 1989 is about a relationship giving her anxiety. She said, "the number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative."
Jennifer Lawrence: You might have seen Jennifer Lawrence explore mental illness as Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook, but the highest-paid actress in the world also deals with mental health off screen. Jennifer has social anxiety and uses acting to soothe her. She told French magazine Madame Figaro in a 2013 interview that her struggle began in school.
