More than half of Madhya Pradesh faces threat of adverse weather conditions on account of global warming and climate change, a new study has revealed. With an aim to predict impact of global warming and climate change on MP, a study on vulnerable zones and risk involved was carried out by Environmental Planning & Coordination Organisation (EPCO). The study predicts there are 34 districts in the state which may face adverse climatic conditions in future, if the present policies regarding forests, socio-economic aspects and infrastructure are not ungraded and improved. According to the report titled ‘Vulnerability and risk assessment of Madhya Pradesh towards climate change’, districts located in the North and North-eastern regions of the state will be most affected due to climate change. Report considered environmental, socio-economic conditions and infrastructure as the criteria to predict the vulnerability of districts to climate change. Only four districts – Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior and Hoshangabad – fall under the list of least vulnerable districts in the state. These districts have good forest cover, higher economic capacity, higher per capita income, good irrigation potential, literacy rate, and better accessibility to infrastructure.
