Heeding to the request of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), the Education Department has decided to introduce the study of human rights in the curriculum from the academic year 2016-17.
Ajay Seth, Principal Secretary, Primary and Secondary Education Department, confirmed that the subject would be introduced at the school level. However, the modalities of how it will be done are still being finalised, he said. “We will try introducing it in government schools first,” he added. MeeraSaxena, acting chairperson, KSHRC, had earlier written to the department recommending the inclusion of a chapter on human rights in primary, middle and high school levels across the State. In her earlier correspondence, she had stated that the lack of awareness about human rights is one of the primary factors for the ‘present day unrest in society’.
