Kagoshima (Southern Japan) has now become home to the country’s largest solar plant.
The area is primarily known for the volcano Sakurajima, rocket launchpads and gree tea
plantations.

Kyocera, a smartphone maker headquartered in Japan recently launched the Kagoshima
Nanatsujima Mega Solar Power Plant of 70-megawatt capacity that can produce electricity
enough to power about 22,000 homes.

Kyocera has tied up with six other firms and a company to run the plant. It plans to sell the
electricity produced to Kyushu Electric Power Co.

According to a Japanese government program, utilities need to to buy 100% of electricity
generated from some renewable energy power plants.

To encourage the solar philosophy, the Kagoshima plant hopes to become an attraction for
tourists, students, and other visitors by making an observation room that will overlook the
installation, adjoining other Japanese photovoltaic attractions like Sanyo Solar Ark.
