The Language of Love

Perhaps you aren’t aware about it, or maybe you just haven’t noticed it yet, but everyone speaks a love language. Every person has their own beautiful and unique way of expressing and receiving love. Whether it’s quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service, gift receiving, or physical touch, the love languages have been both criticized and admired. But what exactly do the 5 love languages mean?

Quality Time and Words of Affirmation

Well, let’s begin with one of the most popular ones: quality time. I think almost everyone needs and deserves quality time with their loved ones, no matter what they may identify as their love language. To give someone your undivided attention, to have meaningful conversations and just spending time with your favorite person is what quality time is all about.

Words of affirmation is one of my love languages. I suppose, being a writer, that is kind of obvious, but expressing and receiving love through words that have so much emotion really feels magical. If someone ever wrote me a love letter, I’d fall in love almost immediately. Hearing ‘I love you’, receiving compliments, or just words of encouragement really make me blush, and I absolutely love to hear someone say things, or write things, as does everyone who recognize words of affirmation as their love language, or one of them.

Acts of Service, Gifts, and Physical Touch

Acts of service is another love language that shows that actions speak louder than words, and doing something that might help the person you love or make life a little easier for them is what acts of service are. They are gestures that say ‘I love you,’ and these could be small or big deeds like cooking someone their favorite meals, helping them with chores, just really sweet and selfless acts that you love to do for them.

I think that everyone loves to receive gifts, because, well, isn’t it one of the biggest reasons why we look forward to our birthdays? But random gift giving to a person you love can really show how much they mean to you. These could be receiving flowers, chocolates, handmade gifts personalized for the ones you love, or just surprising them with something they love. With the love language of gifts, it’s not about the money spent on it, but the effort and love behind the gift is what makes gift giving and receiving such a special love language. I personally feel that everyone in the world has this love language, because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love getting flowers?

One of my love languages has always been physical touch. Whenever I feel low, hugs always, ALWAYS make me feel better. If I’m upset, or crying, all I really need is to be held in the arms of someone I love, kissed on the top of my head and tell me that everything’s gonna be okay. To hold hands, to hold each other close, it’s almost like you’re holding their heart, for those who speak the love language of physical touch.

The Importance of All Five Love Languages

In my opinion, I think everyone needs a mix of all the five love languages. The truth is, people liked to be loved in all languages. Although there may be a couple that someone expresses the most or feels loved with the most, everyone needs a little bit of all five languages, even the ones they may not be the most fluent in. They are almost like the five ingredients to make the perfect potion of love.

People often mistake the love languages to be something meant only for their partners, but the truth is, these languages are for all the people you love and who love you, romantic or not.

A wrong use of the five love languages has often been to play matchmaker or question compatibility with partners, but these languages are only important for relationships to build stronger connections and learn and understand how to love, because all five languages of love are the most meaningful ways of expressing and receiving love.
