The film Lunchbox deals with the lives of lonely people living in the crowded metropolis of Mumbai. An error made by the meticulous tiffin deliverymen of Mumbai, leads to a chance romance between Ila, a lonely housewife of an unfaithful husband and Sajaan Fernandez, a dour widower, living a lonely life working for the government. A meal Ila cooks with utmost affection to gain her husband’s attention finds its way on Fernandez’s office desk. Ila on realizing this confronts Saajan by sending him a second lunchbox with a letter enclosed, hopeful of some acknowledgement. This triggers a chain of letters to be exchanged amongst them through daily lunchboxes where they convey to each other their innermost thoughts and the intimate moments of their day-to-day life. Despite finding comfort in Ila, Fernandez withdraws his presence as he believes he is too old a man to be a part of Ila’s life and chooses to retire and move away from the city. Ila’s search for Fernandez ends as she realizes he has moved away. At the end he is shown to have a change of heart and goes out to seek her. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character Shaikh adds a hint of humor and provides a look into the life of a diligent man trying to make ends meet in the city. The slow paced nature of the film is complemented well by the performances given by Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur. The expressive yet minimalist performance given by Nimrat Kaur is spectacular. The film is shot well in locations across Mumbai ranging from the local trains to many iconic landmarks like Oval Maidan. The writer/director Ritesh Batra has tried to incorporate the feeling of a Mumbai that is a part of the day-to-day lives of millions in all aspects of the film especially the score. The movie deals with the concept of love in an unconventional manner, where the demeanor of the character changes and the insecurity felt about losing a loved one finally overpowers. The story portrays the all female characters to be extremely submissive and loyal. Overall the movie is a delight visually but the story struggles at points to keep you focused.
