If festival attendees and press have sometimes struggled with what to make of New Frontier, that’s probably part of the point. In the festival’s first press release announcing the 2007 curation, fest director John Cooper noted the expanded program was to "provide a platform not only for filmmakers, but for artists who are pushing the limits of how audiences engage with the moving image."
