In 2013, citizen activism pushed politics of aspiration ahead of politics of fear

It’s time to count this year’s blessings. These are in startling abundance, given that India was looking at a logjammed polity at the beginning of 2013. And a heinous gang rape in its capital had magnified fears about how the country’s underlying tensions may explode in the face of sweeping social changes. What’s instead happened is that citizen activism has made a usually stodgy Parliament nimbly push through a really stronganti-rape legislation, and encouraged women to break traditional shackles of shame to report cases of harassment. Plus, the rules of politics at large are being rewritten dramatically.
