GURUGRAM: Half of India's girls know little of menstruation when they experience their first period. And women and girls who lack basic knowledge about menstruation often end up using unhygienic materials, like old cloth, dried leaves, grass, ash, sand or newspapers. These are just a couple of distressing facts surrounding menstrual health in the country. But it doesn't have to be this way, and in an attempt to break the stigma and silence around the topic, WASH United and Happy mcgarrybowen teamed up to conceive of the disruptive short film, 'To Bleed Without Violence'. The video on menstrual hygiene is at once powerful and persuasive, urging people to talk about the subject openly, and women to "bleed with pride". WASH United is a global not-for-profit that seeks to achieve safe water, sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030, by effecting changes in social behaviour. It is also the force and spirit behind Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28).
