Why 47 Companies Stopped Competing And Started Collaborating For Good

In 2014, my creative agency Mekanism launched a campaign in partnership with non-profit Civic Nation called It’s On Us. The intention was simple but lofty: to end rape culture on college campuses. Now entering its third year, the campaign has been incredibly successful at sparking a much-needed conversation and creating real change on campuses around the country. And it continues to gain momentum. For me personally, It’s On Us demonstrated what can happen when the power of advertising is harnessed for genuine social good. It got me thinking: What if more advertising agencies, marketers, and content creators put their energies toward real political change? What if, instead of just persuading people to buy things, we inspired them to care about pressing social issues, and to take action to improve the world?
