While individual numbers vary from city to city, no one is really keeping a record of the number of stray animals killed and/or injured. According to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Chandigarh, around 1,600 animals were injured in road accidents in the city in 2013. Many of them died from their injuries. This distressing situation is not being addressed by local authorities in any way. Animal rescue organisations pick up the slack by rescuing injured animals and caring for them.
