A report `Rajasthan Action Plan on Climate Change’ drafted recently by various departments of the state government with the help of TERI has also pointed out that the quality of ground water was a major issue The quality of ground water is a major concern for the state. At least 28% of the country’s water which is considered “poor “is found here, in Rajasthan! Of the total fluoride-affected water in the country, 44% is available in this state. Eighty-four per cent saline-affected habitats of the country is in the desert state. In a recently held meeting with public health and engineering department, chief minister Vasundhara Raje had pointed out that out of 243 blocks in the state, only 25 had safe groundwater stocks. A report ‘Rajasthan Action Plan on Climate Change’ drafted recently by various departments of the state government with the help of TERI has also pointed out that the quality of ground water was a major issue. It was mentioned in the report that the quality of ground water has progressively deteriorated. “Over extraction of ground water has brought adverse changes in the geochemistry of water. Natural contaminates such as fluoride, nitrate and chloride salts are increasing in concentration in ground water making it unfit for drinking and posing risk to health,” the report says. It further elaborated that more than 75% of the villages and habitations are affected by poor quality water. It also expressed its concern.
