Non-city residents ‘contributing to high maternal mortality rates in Mumbai’
by The Daily Eye Team April 3 2014, 10:06 am Estimated Reading Time: 0 mins, 33 secsThe maternal mortality rate in Mumbai is being distorted by patients from outside the city, an official has stated. According to Dr Padmaja Keskar, deputy executive health officer at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, many women from areas such as Thane and Kalyan go to civic hospitals in Mumbai for treatment, the Indian Express reports. As a result, the maternal mortality rate in Mumbai is higher than it would be if only city residents are taken into account. Indeed, Dr Keskar said that while the official figure is currently 158 deaths per 100,000 live births, the statistic would be just 71 if only people who live in the city are included.
