Despite limited resources and economic sanctions, the Cuban health system guaranteed access to healthcare for all. It obtained results similar to those of the developed world. Most recently, Cuba became the first country to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Its rate of infant mortality, an important indicator of healthcare, is remarkably low at 4.2 per thousand births. An effective vaccine programme eliminated measles in 1993, thereby saving large sums of public money that would have been spent on treating avoidable outbreaks.
